湖北省政府 recently launched a grand project to protect the Han River, with an investment of 460 billion yuan. The goal is to transform the river into a pristine waterway, teeming with life and beauty.
The project includes four main areas: ecological environment protection, water resources management, agricultural development and cultural tourism. It will cover 10 cities in the Han River basin, spanning over 63,000 square kilometers – nearly one-third of Hubei Province.
The plan aims to create a harmonious relationship between humans and nature by improving air quality, conserving water resources and promoting sustainable agriculture. Additionally, it will establish green corridors along highways and promote eco-tourism.
The implementation period for this ambitious project is from 2013 to 2025. During this time frame, more than 320 key projects will be carried out across various sectors including pollution control measures for industrial waste gas emissions; construction of drinking water sources; comprehensive treatment of urban sewage and garbage disposal facilities; prevention of environmental pollution in large-scale livestock breeding operations; protection of ecologically sensitive areas such as wetlands or forests; enhancement capabilities for environmental monitoring systems etc., totaling an investment amount exceeding RMB460 billion (approximately USD64 billion).
