Industrial wastewater and domestic sewage can cause a series of environmental problems. For example, excessive organic pollutants in industrial waste water can lead to eutrophication, while heavy metals in both types of wastewater can accumulate in the food chain and pose health risks to humans and animals. In addition, untreated sewage may also pollute surface waters, causing unpleasant odors and unsightly algae growth.
Before treatment begins, it is essential to collect and transport these waste materials safely. Industrial wastewaters are typically collected through dedicated drainage systems within factories or mining sites. Domestic sewage is often collected via sewer networks that connect households to municipal treatment plants.
In order for industrial wastewaters and domestic sewage to be effectively treated, they first need to undergo physical-chemical pretreatment processes. This stage involves removing large particles such as grits or rags from the flow using screens or grit chambers; followed by chemical coagulation/flocculation processes that help settle suspended solids into larger clumps which are easier to remove.
Once pre-treated, the remaining liquid will proceed through biological treatment processes such as activated sludge systems or trickling filters where microorganisms break down organic pollutants into carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), ammonia (NH3) etc., eventually producing clean effluent with much reduced levels of BOD5 (biochemical oxygen demand).
After biological treatment has removed most contaminants from the waste stream, some facilities may choose further tertiary treatments like filtration or disinfection before discharging them back into rivers or oceans if deemed safe enough for aquatic life after stringent monitoring tests have been passed.
Finally processed water could also be used for various purposes such as irrigation agriculture; cooling towers at power plants; even toilet flushing within buildings reducing our overall freshwater consumption significantly saving energy resources too!
